Hooker Valley Day Walk

Easily the most popular day hike in the National Park, the Hooker Valley Track is known for its beautiful Aoraki views, picturesque swing bridges, glacier views and iceberg filled lakes. It is an easy track suitable for hikers of most abilities with a very gentle incline, approximately 124 metres over 5km. The track is 10km return and is not a loop track.

Half Day Hike - Elevation gain 124m, total distance: approx 10km return from the Hermitage

  • From the Hermitage you will depart on foot to the White Horse Hill campground to the start of the Hooker Valley track, from here you will hike to the 2nd swing bridge and then return the way you came
  • Views of Mueller Glacier and Aoraki/Mount Cook
  • Half day trips depart daily at 8.30am and 1.00pm
  • Allow 2-4 hours (duration varies depending on group size and fitness levels)
  • Adult $160, Child $99
  • Moderate fitness is required to complete the walk
  • Minimum child age for this activity is 4 years old and children must be able to walk with the rest of the group

Full Day Hike - Elevation gain 124m, total distance: approx 16km return from the Hermitage

  • From the Hermitage you will depart on foot to the White Horse Hill campground to the start of the Hooker Valley track, from here you will hike to the Hooker Lake at the end of the track and then return the way you came
  • Views of Mueller Glacier, Hooker Lake and Aoraki/Mount Cook
  • A packed lunch is included on the full-day hike
  • Full day trips depart daily at 9.00am
  • Allow 5-7 hours (duration varies depending on group size and fitness levels)
  • Adult $219, Child $139
  • Moderate fitness is required to complete the walk.

Kea Point

Kea Point is an easy, beautiful walk in Aoraki/Mount Cook. The track is rated easy and is suitable for absolutely everyone, with a gentle incline of 180 metres over 3km. The track weaves in and out of native bush, and features sections of boardwalk, subalpine grasslands, scrub and gravel before you arrive at your destination - the Kea Point lookout.

Kea Point Hike - Elevation gain 180m, total distance: approx 6km return from the Hermitage

  • From the Hermitage you will depart on foot along Kea Point Track to the Kea Point Lookout and then return the way you came
  • Views of Mueller Glacier and the moraine wall, Mount Sefton, Hooker Valley and Aoraki/Mount Cook
  • Trips depart daily at 8.30am and 1.00pm
  • Allow 2-4 hours (duration varies depending on group size and fitness levels)
  • Adult $160, Child $99
  • Low-moderate fitness is required to complete the walk

Red Tarns

Red Tarns is located at the back of the lower Aoraki/Mount Cook Village. The track is steep and climbs 300 metres in elevation. It is a leg burner and is best suited to people who have a moderate-high fitness level. It is not a particularly long walk, just steep with plenty of steps to assist with the incline. At the top, you are rewarded with stunning panoramic views over Aoraki/Mount Cook.

Red Tarns Hike - Elevation gain 300m, total distance: approx 4km return from the Hermitage

  • From the Hermitage you will depart on foot through Governors Bush down past the village to the start of the Red Tarns Track
  • Views over Aoraki/Mount Cook Village, the Hooker Valley and Aoraki/Mount Cook
  • Trips depart daily at 8.30am and 1.00pm
  • Allow 2-3 hours (duration varies depending on group size and fitness levels)
  • Adult $189
  • Moderate-high fitness is required to complete the walk
  • Minimum age is 15 years

Sealy Tarns

Nicknamed the ‘stairway to heaven’, the Sealy Tarns track branches off from the Kea Point track. A steep incline up 2,200 steps with 600 metres of elevation gain over 6km. Sealy Tarns is best suited for those with moderate to high fitness levels but is well worth it for the views at the top, overlooking Mueller Lake and Aoraki/Mount Cook.

Sealy Tarns Hike - Elevation gain 600m, total distance: approx 6km return from the Hermitage

  • From the Hermitage you will depart on foot along Kea Point Track to the start of the Sealy Tarns Track
  • Views over the Muller Lake and Glacier, Hooker Valley and Aoraki/Mount Cook
  • A packed lunch is included on this trip
  • Trips depart daily at 9.00am
  • Allow 4-5 hours (duration varies depending on group size and fitness levels)
  • Adult $229
